"Marcia Gay Harden was born on the 14th day of August 1959 in the La Jolla area of San Diego, California to Beverly, a housewife, and Thad an US Navy officer. The mother of a brother and three sisters. The family moved frequently because of her father's work as diplomat, which meant they lived across the globe in countries such as Germany, Japan, and Greece. Harden attended Surrattsville High School in Clinton, Maryland after she settled down. In 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a bachelor's degree in the field of theater. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, in 1988, in order to earn her MFA.
